Dr. Hsieh Wei
Dr. Hsieh Wei would make long trips from Nantou to Beimen every Thursday and serve the patients at the free clinic. The average number of BFD patients who required surgical amputations was around five, but sometimes it would reach up to twelve people in one day. The job was a constant struggle between life and death. There was no other effective therapy at that time except for amputation, which made Dr. Hsieh
Wei think it was very cruel, but he kept on trying to find alternative treatments. He dedicated his whole life for the sick, and died in a car accident in 1970 while he was on his way to see his patients.
